An insurance policy is a contract under which an insurer covers specified risks in exchange for a premium. The policy defines who and what is covered, exclusions, limits, deductibles, duties, and the claims process. Belgian social protection and private insurance are related but different. The compulsory health-insurance system normally works through a mutualité, ziekenfonds, or the public auxiliary fund, while additional health or hospital cover may be offered separately. Motor vehicles used in the relevant circumstances require civil-liability cover for damage caused to others. Additional vehicle cover may protect the insured vehicle, driver, legal interests, or assistance needs under its own conditions. Home insurance can cover buildings, contents, or both. Tenants, owners, landlords, lenders, and regional rental rules may create different needs, so the insured address and responsibility must be stated correctly. Family civil-liability insurance is often called assurance familiale or familiale verzekering. It generally concerns private-life harm caused to other people, subject to the people, events, exclusions, and deductible described in the contract. Life, death, disability, travel, legal-protection, and professional policies address different risks. Combining several products can leave gaps or duplicate cover unless their purposes are compared. A claim should be reported promptly with an accurate description and supporting evidence. The insured person should also take reasonable steps to prevent further damage without destroying useful proof. Price alone does not show the value of insurance. Coverage scope, exclusions, deductible, service, claim procedure, cancellation conditions, and the financial size of the risk all matter.
Insurance in Belgium
Insurance in Belgium protects people against financial consequences of accidents, illness, damage, liability, death, and other defined risks. Some cover is compulsory in particular situations, while many household policies are optional but practically important.
Tip
Build your Belgian insurance plan around losses your household could not comfortably absorb. Check compulsory cover first, then close serious gaps and remove accidental duplication after reading the actual policy conditions.
