Language in Belarus

Language in Belarus is centered on Belarusian and Russian, both of which have official status and use the Cyrillic alphabet. Russian is widespread in daily urban communication, while Belarusian has a special role in national heritage, literature, education, and identity. Many people understand both, but confidence, preference, and actual use differ.

Tip

Learn Cyrillic first, then build a small set of Belarusian and Russian phrases for greetings, directions, and thanks. State clearly which language you understand and ask others to speak slowly when needed. Treat a person's language choice as their own decision, not as an invitation to debate identity.
