Professions in Barbados

The Barbados Standard Occupational Classification, BARSOC2016, groups occupations into Legislators and Senior Officers, Professionals, Technicians and Associate Professionals, Clerks, Service and Shop Workers, Skilled Agricultural and Fishery Workers, Craft and Related Workers, Plant and Machine Operators and Assemblers, and Elementary Occupations. Its skill levels reflect qualifications, experience and on-the-job training. In 2025, Barbados had about 126,300 employed people; Service and Shop Workers formed the largest group with 25,700, followed by Elementary Occupations with 17,100, Professionals with 14,900, Clerks with 14,000 and Technicians and Associate Professionals with 13,000. Craft and Related Workers accounted for 12,600, Legislators and Senior Officers for 12,200, Plant and Machine Operators and Assemblers for 7,400, and Skilled Agricultural and Fishery Workers for 5,000. About 80,000 people worked in the private sector, 24,600 in government and 21,400 were self-employed. Academic qualifications commonly support higher-skill occupations. BARSOC skill level 3 often involves one to three years of post-secondary education, while level 4 often involves three to six years of higher education; relevant experience or training may sometimes supplement or replace part of the academic background. The Technical and Vocational Education and Training Council, TVET Council, sets national standards and qualifications. National or Caribbean Vocational Qualifications, N/CVQs, assess practical competence through observation, product assessment, oral or written tests and portfolios. Assessment can take place through an approved centre, workplace or self-employed practice, and Caribbean Vocational Qualifications, CVQs, can support occupational mobility within CARICOM without replacing local professional registration. The Barbados Vocational Training Board, BVTB, offers skills training that combines practical and theoretical learning, employability, entrepreneurship and job attachment. Skills training generally requires a minimum age of 16; Barbadian nationals attend without tuition fees and may receive a weekly stipend of $125, while non-nationals generally pay fees and need approved study status. BVTB apprenticeships combine workplace training with theory, normally require at least age 16 and nine years of formal education, and proceed through an employer or BVTB placement under a contract. The usual duration is about three years, with pay set at at least 45%, 55% and 75% of the journeyman wage in years one, two and three. Evening programmes support employed and unemployed adults with upskilling or reskilling, commonly last 12 weeks and allocate places on a first-come, first-served basis; payment is required before a place is secured, and a refund requested before the third session may be reduced by $50. TVET Council fees are not uniform across all services. Candidate registration or certification and PLAR, meaning Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition, cost $40 for levels 1 and 2 and $70 for levels 3 to 5; PLAR pre-assessment costs $160 and PLAR assessment generally costs $600 to $1,200. Candidate registration may take 30 working days, while centre or qualification approval may take 67 working days. A teacher may enter temporarily or at entry level with five CXC/CSEC General Proficiency passes, including English, Mathematics and Science; permanent appointment normally requires a recognised bachelor’s degree and an approved teacher-training qualification. The Erdiston Teachers’ Training College is one local teacher-training institution. Regulated professions operate under separate laws and professional councils. Examples include attorneys-at-law, medical practitioners, accountants, actuaries, architects, dental practitioners, engineers, land surveyors, quantity surveyors and veterinary surgeons. Health professions require profession-specific checks: the Medical Council regulates medical practice, the Nursing Council regulates nurses, midwives, nursing assistants and nursing auxiliaries, and the Paramedical Professions Council regulates 25 allied-health professions, including physiotherapy, psychology, podiatry, dietetics and nutrition, medical laboratory technology and pre-hospital care. Registration and, where required, a Certificate of Registration or Practising Certificate must be completed before practice. Fees, continuing professional education, renewal and disciplinary duties depend on the applicable council, Act and current Gazette requirements. Public-service vacancies lasting more than 12 months are generally advertised under the Merit Code. Entry-level applicants need the stated qualifications, proof of nationality and a curriculum vitae, while the Competency Framework supports recruitment and career progression. Foreign qualifications are not automatically accepted; the relevant employer, council or human-resources authority must assess equivalence and any registration requirement. Ministry of Labour rules cover industrial relations, occupational safety and health, and labour standards. The Safety and Health at Work Act protects workplace health, safety and welfare, and a worker may refuse a task where an immediate danger has been demonstrated.
