Language learning in Barbados includes the deliberate acquisition and use of English, local language varieties, foreign languages, and functional language skills for everyday life and work. In primary school, the language-arts subject (Language Arts) is part of the curriculum; Spanish may be offered through a dedicated primary-school programme. In secondary school, the range and access of foreign-language offerings depend on the individual school and programme. No nationwide uniform requirement to learn a foreign language has been documented. Bajan is a local informal variety of English. Barbados uses Standard English for teaching, examinations, administration, and many services. No separate formal school or examination pathway has been documented for Bajan. Students can take language subjects through examinations of the Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC). The Caribbean Certificate of Secondary Level Competence (CCSLC) includes English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish, among other subjects. The Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) offers English A and B as well as French, Portuguese, and Spanish. The Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) provides a possible continuation pathway. CSEC examinations usually take place in January for resit and private candidates and in May and June for school and private candidates. Private candidates register through the responsible ministry; fees are processed through the Ministry of Finance and EZ Pay. Barbados Community College and its Barbados Language Centre offer a two-year Associate Degree in Foreign Languages for Business & Tourism with French, Spanish, German, and Italian, as well as a two-year Associate Degree Languages with Themes with French and Spanish. Part-time certificates include beginner, general, intermediate, and specialised courses in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Chinese, and English as a foreign language. Admission to the Associate Degrees requires at least four CSEC subjects at General I to III, four GCE O-Level subjects at A to C, or equivalent qualifications; English and French or Spanish are among the stated entry requirements. Current fees depend on the programme. The UWI Cave Hill offers bachelor's degrees in French and Spanish, combinations with Management Studies, and a minor in Chinese. The UWI language-entry course (Foreign Language Requirement Course) offers French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Chinese to applicants without a CXC qualification or equivalent evidence. For 2024/25, beginner courses in Caribbean Sign Language and Japanese are also documented. The Centre for Professional Development and Lifelong Learning offers French, Spanish, Portuguese, English as a second language, and Mandarin, as well as business and tourism courses covering all four language skills. Dates and prices change. Alliance Française de Bridgetown offers French courses throughout the year and preparation for diplomas and certificates. The Confucius Institute at UWI Cave Hill offers Mandarin and HSK Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) courses online or on campus, often over ten weeks. Published examples include BDS$400 per semester for people outside UWI, BDS$50 per VIP hour, and BDS$300 for ten weeks of HSK preparation; UWI offerings may be free. Learn Chinese Together and the National Library Service offer free online programmes with no more than 30 participants, as well as children’s, youth, and school locations. For 2024/25, nine fixed locations, 13 special programmes, 109 courses, and 1,967 participants were reported. The only DELE Spanish diploma examination (DELE) centre in Barbados documented in a report for 2024/25 is located at Cave Hill. Course certificates are not automatically equivalent to CXC, DELE, or HSK qualifications. Language skills are particularly relevant to tourism, businesses, and the civil and public service. A Barbados–Venezuela working group announced for 2026 plans English- and Spanish-language exchanges, teacher exchanges from 2027/28, and scholarships from 2027/28; these plans do not yet constitute confirmed nationwide implementation.
