Bangladesh has an established formal insurance market regulated by IDRA under the Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority Act 2010 and the Insurance Act 2010. The market includes 35 private life insurers and Jiban Bima Corporation, as well as 45 private non-life insurers and Sadharan Bima Corporation. Sadharan Bima Corporation is the state non-life insurer and reinsurer; it underwrites state property risks and distributes part of that business to private insurers. Products include term life, endowment, deposit, pension, child, education and group life insurance, accident riders, disability cover, health insurance, microinsurance, Takaful or Islamic insurance, fire, marine, motor, property, liability, crop and expatriate-worker insurance. Health coverage remains fragmented among private, group and micro-health products, and no nationwide compulsory health-insurance system was confirmed in the reviewed official sources. The Universal Pension Scheme has four schemes for different income and employment situations, but it is a voluntary contribution-based pension system, not conventional insurance or a comprehensive social-insurance provider. Insurance companies, reinsurers, intermediaries, agents and surveyors require IDRA registration or licensing, so customers should use a licensed company or agent. Premiums depend on the product, risk, age, insured amount, term, underwriting and claims conditions; taxes, stamp duty or VAT may also apply. Before signing, check the policy wording, exclusions, sum insured, nominee, payment dates, grace period, lapse and renewal rules, cancellation or surrender options, and the current quotation. Keep the policy, receipts, identity documents and communications, and notify the insurer promptly after a covered event. Claims normally require complete supporting documents, and a surveyor handling a relevant claim should hold an IDRA licence. If the insurer does not resolve a complaint, the policyholder can use the IDRA grievance process, track the complaint number and contact the IDRA hotline 16310. Motor-vehicle owners or organisations are addressed by section 60 of the Road Transport Act 2018, which covers insurance for the vehicle and possible passenger life or property risks; the Financial Assistance Fund for accident victims is statutory compensation, not insurance.
Insurance in Bangladesh
Insurance in Bangladesh covers defined life, health, property, liability and income risks through contracts or statutory systems. The Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority (IDRA) supervises insurers, agents, surveyors, products, premiums, solvency and complaints. The market includes life, non-life, motor, fire, marine, group, microinsurance and Takaful products, while the Universal Pension Scheme covers old-age income rather than ordinary insurance.
Tip
Treat insurance in Bangladesh as a product-by-product risk decision, not as one universal protection package. Match the cover to the risk you actually need to transfer, verify the licensed provider, and judge the policy by exclusions, claim conditions, payment burden and renewal consequences.
