Health in the Bahamas

Healthcare in the Bahamas combines public and private services. Local clinics provide primary care, while hospitals and specialist providers add diagnostic services, treatment, and rehabilitation. Because services are distributed across many islands, availability and accessibility vary; emergencies are handled through 911 or 919, the national emergency medical service (National Emergency Medical Services (NEMS)), and the nearest emergency department. The National Health Insurance scheme (National Health Insurance Bahamas) currently covers selected outpatient primary-care services, but not, for example, medicines, emergencies, inpatient treatment, or surgery.

Tip

Plan healthcare in the Bahamas according to the island, urgency, and type of service because clinics and specialist services are not equally available everywhere. Save the emergency numbers 911 and 919 and clarify the responsible provider early for planned treatment. Do not automatically rely on the NHI for medicines, emergencies, or inpatient treatment; check financing in advance.
