The 2022 Census recorded 398,165 people in The Bahamas. Baptist communities were the largest recorded group with 135,875 people, followed by Anglican communities with 47,456, other Christian denominations including non-denominational churches with 35,296, Roman Catholics with 34,749, Pentecostals with 31,971, Church of God communities with 19,663, Seventh-day Adventists with 17,502, Methodists with 10,996 and Brethren with 5,823. The census also recorded 4,225 Jehovah's Witnesses, 1,139 Rastafarians, 336 Muslims, 296 Hindus, 190 Jews, 70 members of the Baha'i Faith and 1,813 people in other non-Christian religions. It recorded 24,677 people with no religion, 293 atheists and 19,075 people who did not state a religion. The Bahamas Christian Council coordinates Christian denominations and serves as a public voice, but it is not a state regulator and The Bahamas has no general government religious authority. People usually access worship, prayer, Sunday school, religious teaching, sacraments, rites and pastoral care through the relevant local congregation, the Diocese of The Bahamas and The Turks and Caicos Islands, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Nassau or another denomination-specific body. Access, membership, contributions, appointments and ceremony arrangements vary by congregation and island; no single national fee or admission system applies. Article 22 of the Constitution protects freedom of conscience, religious belief, changing religion, public or private worship, teaching, practice and observance. A person cannot be required to take part in another religion's instruction or ceremony without consent, and a religious body may provide its own instruction. A person cannot be forced to take an oath that conflicts with religious belief. Article 26 protects people from discrimination because of creed. Restrictions may apply only when constitutionally justified for matters such as public safety, public order, public morality, public health or the rights of other people. Public schools include religious instruction and facilities for religious observance. Parents can submit a written request to withdraw a learner, without losing other school benefits. Schools may not use religious instruction for conversion, denigration or discrimination, and a teacher with a conscientious objection is not required to provide it. A private school may provide religious instruction under its proprietor. An absence for an exclusively religious observance day of the parent's religious body can be excused. Good Friday, Easter Monday, Whit Monday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day are statutory public holidays, alongside other secular holidays. A public holiday does not by itself require religious participation. For marriage, the Registrar General, a Registrar, a Magistrate or a registered marriage officer handles the legal process. A minister of religion may apply to become a registered marriage officer, but a religious ceremony has legal effect only when the required authorized officer conducts or completes the legal requirements. A minister is not required to perform a marriage. Baptism, confirmation, funerals and naming ceremonies follow the rules of the relevant congregation or denomination rather than one national religious procedure. Timing and fees for marriage depend on the Registrar General's requirements, the authorized officer and the chosen ceremony, and island access may affect availability.
Religion in Bahamas
Christianity is the dominant religious tradition in The Bahamas, with Baptist, Anglican, other Christian, Roman Catholic, Pentecostal, Church of God, Seventh-day Adventist, Methodist and Brethren communities represented. The Constitution protects freedom of conscience, worship, teaching, practice and religious observance, while public schools include religious instruction within the curriculum. Religious communities also provide worship, education, pastoral care and ceremonies for life events.
Tip
Choose the local religious body according to the service or ceremony you need, and confirm arrangements directly because access, fees, schedules and island availability vary. Treat worship, school participation, public holidays and legally valid marriage as separate questions. Keep written confirmations for school withdrawals and verify marriage authority before relying on a religious ceremony for legal purposes.
