Upskilling in the Bahamas

The continuing-education system in the Bahamas is institutionally established but distributed among several providers and areas of responsibility. They include the education and technical training ministry (Ministry of Education & Technical and Vocational Training), the labour ministry (Ministry of Labour), the National Training Agency (NTA), the National Accreditation and Equivalency Council of The Bahamas (NAECOB), the University of The Bahamas (UB), CELEARN, the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI), professional regulators, companies and approved providers. Formal certificates, non-academic courses, professional development and self-directed learning operate in parallel. Free public offerings target different groups depending on the programme. Upskill Bahamas is open to Bahamian citizens aged 16 and over online and at their own pace on all islands. The course offering and cohorts change; at its launch in 2025, more than 40 courses and up to 8,000 funded enrolments were planned. DigiLearn Bahamas provides free courses in information and communication technology, cybersecurity, programming, e-commerce and basic computer skills. UB and BTVI deliver these offerings; current cohorts in 2026 are partly in person and partly virtual. Depending on the course, a suitable device, Wi-Fi or a camera may be required. The NTA offers a free 14-week programme primarily for young Bahamian citizens aged 16 to 26. A four-week Workforce Preparatory Programme is followed by ten weeks of practical training and, in some cases, work placements. Credentials are available for New Providence, Grand Bahama and Exuma, among other locations. Practical areas include food preparation, housekeeping, automotive body repair, Microsoft Business Applications, cooking and baking, and retail. The programme is designed to support work readiness and possible job placement. BTVI offers Professional Development Courses (PDCs). These courses award Professional Development Units (PDUs) rather than academic credits; general access is usually open, while certification and licensing courses may have additional requirements. Published examples cost US$450, last five to eight weeks and take place in the evenings or at weekends. The application fee is US$50, is non-refundable and remains valid for one year. Course fees and examination, certification and licensing costs vary by offering; a full refund is provided only if BTVI cancels the course. UB CELEARN offers non-academic certificate programmes and short courses for professional development, career changes and lifelong learning. They are often delivered in the evenings or on Saturdays, applications can be submitted online and the application fee is US$50. For certain Professional and Personal Development offerings, the admission rules require written and spoken English proficiency as well as a recognized diploma, degree or equivalent professional experience. These courses do not award academic credits or a university degree. A certificate does not automatically prove occupational licensing, academic recognition or guaranteed job placement. Before enrolling, clarify which provider and organization issues the credential, whether it is accredited, whether a professional board recognizes it and whether a licence or later renewal depends on it. Certain professions have additional continuing-education requirements. For example, the Bahamas Institute of Chartered Accountants requires 30 hours per calendar year, including 20 sponsored hours, 120 hours per reporting period with 60 sponsored hours, and 40 subject-specific hours within 36 months. Medical professionals must provide proof of Continuing Medical Education for licence renewal. Access is best documented for Bahamian citizens and residents through public programmes, but it is not uniform nationwide. In-person offerings are more concentrated in New Providence and Grand Bahama, as well as on individual Family Islands. Online courses reduce travel, but require a stable connection and suitable devices. Employer courses, self-directed learning and private or international online certificates also serve a continuing-education function, but there is no central national record; recognition depends on the employer or the relevant professional organization. University study, initial vocational training and standalone language learning are outside this area.
