Living in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan lies on the western shore of the Caspian Sea between the Caucasus and the plains of Western Asia; around 10.2 million people live there. The country stretches from dry, partly semi-desert lowlands to forested mountains that receive heavy snowfall in winter. Along the coast, the climate is generally dry and windy, while in the south it is milder and more humid. In Baku, densely built-up neighborhoods, modern residential complexes, the metro and buses shape everyday life; many people work in services, trade or the energy sector. Outside the capital, families also live in smaller towns and villages, where agriculture, crafts and personal connections are more important. Shared meals, tea and walks are part of leisure time in many places.
