Romantic Relationships in Austria

A romantic relationship is a voluntary connection in which people share romantic or partnership-based closeness. The people involved decide together how close, lasting, or public they want it to be. In Austria, couples may live separately, in a shared household, in non-marital cohabitation (Lebensgemeinschaft), in a marriage, or in a registered partnership (eingetragene Partnerschaft). Personal meaning and legal effect are not always the same. When getting to know each other, closeness and trust usually grow gradually. Both people may set their own pace and decline an invitation or a touch. In everyday life together, questions about housing, money, household work, leisure time, fidelity, and family planning become important. Explicit agreements are more likely to prevent misunderstandings than unspoken expectations. Marriage and registered partnership are formal legal relationships. A non-marital cohabitation may look similar in everyday life, but it does not automatically establish the same rights and obligations everywhere. Good relationships combine closeness with independence. Both people may keep their own contacts, interests, areas of money, and periods of retreat. Conflicts should be handled without humiliation, threats, or violence. Control over a phone, money, clothing, or contacts is not a necessary sign of love. A relationship can end by mutual agreement or at the request of one person. After a separation, clear agreements about housing, property, children, and contact are particularly important.
