Languages in Austria

German is the official language and language of instruction used throughout Austria. It is needed for most dealings with public authorities, educational opportunities and professional activities. Austrian German is part of the German standard language and has its own commonly used words and expressions. People who already know German from another country can usually learn these differences gradually in everyday life. Dialects are spoken in many regions. A dialect may sound unfamiliar at first, but schools, written communication and official conversations generally use a form of the standard language. Austria is multilingual. In addition to German, recognized minority languages, Austrian Sign Language and many languages spread through migration are used. Children can develop German in kindergarten and school through daily contact, lessons and targeted support. Their family language can continue to be maintained alongside German, because secure knowledge of several languages can support learning and a sense of belonging. Adults learn German in language courses, through self-study, at language meetups and through regular conversations, among other options. Courses can focus on general everyday language or on specific goals such as work and vocational training. Language skills consist of several parts. Listening, speaking, reading and writing need to be practiced separately because a person may feel differently confident in each area. Language certificates can be important for vocational training, work or certain formal procedures. The required level and recognized examination depend on the purpose and should be clarified directly with the responsible authority. Language creates access, but it does not remove every obstacle. Difficult technical terms, dialect, fear of making mistakes or a lack of practice can make conversations more difficult, which is why clear explanations and patient support remain important.
