Living in Australia
Australia is an island continent between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, with around 25 million people. The country extends from tropical coasts in the north, through fertile regions in the southeast, to dry deserts and vast grasslands inland. The climate is generally milder along the coasts, while the north is tropical and the interior is hot and receives little rainfall. Most people live in major cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or Perth, often in suburbs with detached houses; apartments are common in city centres. Cars play an important role, complemented by buses, trains and ferries. Work and leisure are regionally focused on services, industry, agriculture or mining, as well as sport, nature and life by the water.
