Arrival in Australia

Australia is a large country made up of states and territories. Many everyday rules and services therefore depend on both your national status and the place where you live. At the border, travellers complete immigration and biosecurity checks. Australia applies strict controls to food, plants, animal products, soil, and outdoor equipment, so declaring questionable items is important. After arrival, a reliable address and Australian phone number make many other tasks easier. Temporary accommodation can work at first, but some organisations may ask for evidence of a residential address. Everyday payments commonly use bank cards and electronic transfers. Opening an Australian bank account can simplify wages, bills, rent, and identification checks. People who work may need a tax file number, commonly called a TFN. Eligibility for Medicare, Australia's public health insurance system, depends on a person's residence and migration circumstances. Public transport differs between cities, while regional and remote areas may offer fewer services. Local journey planners and the transport card or payment system used in your city help with early travel. Identity documents are often checked when arranging housing, banking, work, or services. Keep your passport, visa information, address evidence, and important records secure and easy to retrieve. Settlement happens step by step. Start with needs that affect safety and access, then build local knowledge through councils, community organisations, schools, workplaces, and neighbours.
