Language in Angola

Angola has Portuguese as its only official language (língua oficial) and a diverse landscape of languages of Angola (línguas de Angola), also known as national languages (línguas nacionais). Portuguese connects administration, formal education, national politics, and communication across regions; local languages shape family life, communities, religion, culture, and local public information. In the 2024 census, people aged two and older most often named Portuguese as their mother tongue (língua materna), followed by Umbundu, Kimbundu, Cokwe, and Kikongo. Language choice depends strongly on region, urbanization, education, and mobility.
