Banks in Afghanistan

Afghanistan's banking system is overseen by Afghanistan's central bank and supervisory authority (Da Afghanistan Bank, DAB). The DAB currently lists twelve operational banks: three state-owned banks, seven private banks and two foreign bank branches. Accounts, cash, cards, digital payments, Islamic banking products and money transfers through informal transfer networks (Hawala) have varying levels of availability.

Tip

Choose the payment method in Afghanistan according to the specific purpose: a licensed bank is suitable for traceable account management, cards and formal payments, while mobile money or Hawala may be more practically usable depending on availability. Before using a service, check not only fees but also identity requirements, access to cash, currency, current withdrawal limits, recourse options and the provider's actual accessibility. Do not rely on an outdated bank list or assume blanket protection for deposits or payments.
