Nature in Portugal

Portugal has several natural regions because its climate and landforms change from north to south and between the mainland and the islands. The north is generally greener and more Atlantic, the interior has mountains and wide rural areas, and the south is often warmer and drier. Madeira and the Azores have island habitats with many special species. Portuguese nature includes coastlines, dunes, estuaries, lagoons, rivers, wetlands, forests, scrubland, grassland, farmland, caves, and high mountain areas. Some places are shaped by people over many centuries, such as cork oak landscapes, olive groves, vineyards, and terraced hillsides. A landscape can therefore be both natural and cultural at the same time. Portugal uses several names for protected places. A Parque Nacional is a highly important protected area, while a Parque Natural protects a broader landscape where people may live and work. A Reserva Natural gives strong protection to a more specific habitat or species, and a Paisagem Protegida safeguards a valuable landscape. Some habitats are also part of the European Natura 2000 network. Protection does not always mean that people cannot enter. Each area has its own rules for walking, camping, fires, collecting plants, fishing, driving, bringing dogs, and using water. Paths, signs, visitor centres, and local notices help visitors understand what is allowed, but conditions can also change because of fire risk, storms, restoration work, or animal protection. Portugal is home to many birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects, and plants. Examples include cork and holm oaks, pine and juniper, dolphins, seabirds, storks, raptors, wild rabbits, otters, chameleons in suitable southern habitats, and island plants found nowhere else. Native species share space with crops, domestic animals, introduced species, and people. The sea is an important part of Portuguese nature. Coastal habitats include rocky shores, beaches, dunes, salt marshes, seagrass areas, estuaries, and offshore waters. These places support food chains and protect coasts, but they can be harmed by trampling, litter, pollution, poorly managed development, and disturbance during breeding seasons. Wildfire, drought, invasive species, soil loss, water pressure, habitat fragmentation, and climate change can place stress on Portuguese ecosystems. Rural abandonment can also change landscapes by allowing scrub to spread, while intensive land use can reduce variety. Healthy management often requires a balance between conservation, farming, forestry, tourism, fishing, housing, and local livelihoods. People can support nature by staying on marked paths, taking rubbish home, keeping dogs controlled where required, avoiding wild fires, not collecting wild animals or plants, and observing wildlife quietly. They can also choose local products from well-managed landscapes, reduce water and energy waste, plant suitable native species, and report injured animals or environmental damage to the appropriate local service.
