Languages in Peru

Spanish, often called castellano in Peru, is the most widely used language in public life, national communication, education, and many workplaces. Its pronunciation and vocabulary can vary by region and community. Peru also has many native languages. Quechua is used in several Andean areas, Aymara is especially important around the southern Andes, and Amazonian peoples maintain languages connected to their own communities and territories. The term lengua originaria means a native or Indigenous language of Peru. Lengua materna means the language a person first learns at home, although a person can have more than one strong home language. Language use is not the same in every place. A family may speak Quechua, Aymara, or an Amazonian language at home, use Spanish in a town, and switch between languages with relatives, teachers, customers, or public officials. Some schools use Educación Intercultural Bilingüe, or EIB. In these schools, teaching can connect the child’s native language and culture with Spanish and with the wider curriculum. Learning Spanish can help with wider study, travel, and work, while maintaining a native language can strengthen family relationships, cultural knowledge, and community participation. Learning both is often an advantage rather than a problem. A language may have different varieties, spelling traditions, and levels of support in books, technology, and services. A speaker should not assume that one person or one community represents every form of the language. The best first step is to identify the languages used in daily life and choose a clear purpose, such as speaking with grandparents, supporting a child at school, serving customers, or reading community information. Regular listening and conversation are more useful than memorizing isolated words.
