History in Canada

The lands now called Canada have been home to Indigenous peoples since long before European arrival. First Nations and Inuit societies developed distinct governments, trade networks, languages, laws, technologies, and relationships with the land. European fishing, trade, settlement, and imperial rivalry expanded over time. French colonies, often called New France, developed before Britain gained control of major French territories, while Indigenous nations remained essential political and economic actors. Treaties created relationships between Indigenous peoples and the Crown in many regions, but their meanings and implementation remain contested. Some parts of Canada were covered by treaties, while other lands were taken or settled without treaties. Confederation created the Dominion of Canada in 1867 through the union of several colonies. More provinces and territories joined or were created later, producing the present federal system. Canadian governments pursued policies that displaced and controlled Indigenous peoples. The reserve system, residential schools, restrictions on culture, and other colonial measures caused lasting harm that continues to affect communities. Immigration and migration transformed the population and economy. Different groups helped build communities and institutions, while exclusionary policies and racism limited who could enter, vote, work, own property, or belong safely. Canada participated in global wars and developed greater political independence over time. Social movements also changed voting rights, labour conditions, language protections, human rights, and the place of women and minority communities. Modern Canadian history includes continuing debates about Quebec, federalism, immigration, Indigenous rights, reconciliation, regional power, and national identity. History remains visible in institutions, place names, public memory, and unequal outcomes.
