Art in Vietnam

Vietnamese art is made in many materials and settings, from village workshops and family altars to galleries, theatres, temples, public buildings, and digital spaces. Art can be beautiful, useful, spiritual, political, or part of a ceremony. Painting includes silk painting, lacquer painting known as sơn mài, woodblock traditions such as Đông Hồ prints, and many modern styles. Artists may use local subjects such as village life, landscapes, family scenes, markets, workers, or national history. Craft is a major part of visual culture. Ceramics, woven cloth, embroidery, basketry, woodwork, metalwork, lacquer objects, and carved decoration show regional skills and the identities of different ethnic communities. Architecture joins art with belief and daily use. Communal houses, pagodas, temples, churches, imperial buildings, colonial structures, ordinary homes, and modern towers each reflect different periods and social needs. Performance traditions include music, dance, spoken theatre, court-related forms, folk theatre, and water puppetry. These arts often combine story, costume, rhythm, symbolic movement, and live cooperation among performers. Art may be made for a household rather than for a museum. Decorative panels, ancestor portraits, festival images, flowers, calligraphy, and carefully arranged objects can express memory, respect, prosperity, or hope. Vietnamese art is not a single style shared by everyone. Regional history, ethnic community, religion, class, education, gender, and modern markets influence what is made and how it is understood. When looking at an artwork, consider its material, maker, purpose, audience, place, and use. This avoids judging a ceremonial object only as decoration or a craft only by its price.
