Taxes in Vietnam

Vietnam's tax system includes taxes on personal income, business income, consumption, property-related activities, imports, and other transactions. Different taxes apply to different people and activities. Personal income tax is called thuế thu nhập cá nhân, often shortened to thuế TNCN. It may apply to wages, salaries, professional work, investments, property transfers, and other income categories under the relevant rules. Employees often have tax withheld by an employer, while independent workers and business operators may need to manage their own declarations and payments. The correct process depends on the type of income and the person's tax status. A tax identification number is called a mã số thuế. It helps connect a person or organization with tax records and may be needed for work, declarations, refunds, or other official procedures. Value added tax is called thuế giá trị gia tăng, or thuế GTGT. It is generally included in the price of many goods and services, although the treatment can differ by product, service, and transaction. Businesses must normally keep records of sales, purchases, invoices, employees, and payments. Electronic invoices, known as hóa đơn điện tử, are an important part of formal business administration. Tax rules distinguish between revenue, expenses, taxable income, exemptions, deductions, and tax already withheld. A payment record alone does not always prove that the correct tax treatment was used. Good tax practice means keeping documents, checking the applicable income category, meeting official obligations, and asking qualified local help when the situation is complex. Never create false invoices or hide income, because the legal and financial consequences can be serious.
