History in France

The territory now called France was home to many ancient peoples. Roman conquest connected Gaul to the Roman Empire and left lasting influences on roads, towns, law, and the development of language. After Roman rule weakened, several kingdoms emerged. The Frankish kingdoms gave France its name, while medieval kings, nobles, towns, monasteries, and farming communities shared and contested power. The monarchy gradually strengthened and built a more central state. The period later called the Ancien Régime was organised around the crown, social orders, local privileges, and the strong influence of the Catholic Church. The French Revolution began in 1789 and transformed political life. It challenged inherited privilege, promoted citizenship and equality before the law, and also brought violence, war, and rapid changes of government. Napoleon Bonaparte created an empire and spread important administrative and legal reforms. Monarchy, empire, and republic then competed during a politically unsettled nineteenth century. Industrial growth changed cities, work, transport, and social relations. France also built a large colonial empire, whose conquest and rule caused lasting harm and still shape connections, disagreements, and memories. The two World Wars brought invasion, destruction, occupation, resistance, collaboration, and loss. The persecution and murder of Jews and other victims during the Second World War remain essential parts of public remembrance. After 1945, reconstruction, decolonisation, immigration, and European cooperation reshaped the country. Modern France is the Fifth Republic, and historical arguments still influence ideas about citizenship, identity, equality, and France's place in the world.
