Languages in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe's 16 official languages are Chewa, Chibarwe, English, Kalanga, Koisan, Nambya, Ndau, Ndebele, Shangani, Shona, Sign Language, Sotho, Tonga, Tswana, Venda and Xhosa. Indigenous Languages refers to the languages traditionally used by communities in Zimbabwe. English remains central for academic, professional and international communication, while local languages remain important in family life, community communication and schooling. The Constitution gives people the right to use the language of their choice, but it does not create a general individual entitlement to a specific language course, teacher, provider, examination level or certificate. The practical offer depends on the local language area, school, teacher competence, learning materials and funding. Public schools provide formal language learning, but implementation can differ between provinces and schools. The school pathway begins with ECD A and continues through Grade 7 and Forms 1 to 4. From ECD A to Grade 2, an Indigenous Language commonly used in the area is intended to serve as the language of instruction. Grades 3 to 7 include language learning, and Forms 1 to 4 normally include an Indigenous Language and English as learning areas. Foreign Languages can be offered as an elective, depending on the school. The Heritage-Based Curriculum, often shortened to HBC, connects learning with local languages, culture and knowledge. Current Zimbabwe Learning Passport materials include HBC syllabi and language resources, but teacher and material coverage is not uniform nationwide. ZIMSEC, the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council, sets examination rules, timetables, conducts examinations and issues results and certificates. Its published 2025 timetable listed English Language, Shona, Kalanga, Nambya, Ndebele, Tshivenda, Xichangana and Tonga language examinations; 2026 timetables have also been published. Students normally register through their school or an examination centre. Fees and dates depend on the examination session. Enlarged-print or Braille arrangements should be requested before registration for the relevant following examination year. The University of Zimbabwe offers degree and short-course study. Its African Languages and Literature programmes include Ndebele, Shona and Tonga. A Bachelor of Arts Honours programme generally lasts four years, with admission commonly linked to A-Level language or arts subjects; Tonga admission can include a first-language requirement. Short courses include Kiswahili, Ndebele, Shona and Tonga for beginners, as well as a Certificate in Translation and Interpretation Studies. Language-related career areas include teaching, translation, interpreting, media, public relations, courts, Parliament and education. The University of Zimbabwe also offers foreign-language study in Chinese, French, Portuguese and German, together with university-wide Language Acquisition and Inter-cultural Communication courses. These may cover Kiswahili, Sign Language, Ndebele, Shona, Tonga, Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Portuguese and Spanish at Levels 1 to 3. Course availability and prices can change with each intake, so the current offer must be checked with the university. English can be studied through British Council Zimbabwe's English Online service, which offers General, Social and Business English from beginner to advanced level on desktop or tablet. Learners can choose group classes or one-to-one lessons, commonly in monthly packages of 5, 10 or 15 lessons of 55 minutes each. EnglishScore provides a free self-assessment of about 40 minutes from A2 to C1; its certificate is a paid product. English language ability is widely useful for university, banking, nursing, hospitality, foreign affairs and other professional settings, but no general statutory workplace language level was established in the available research. For international study, work or migration, British Council Zimbabwe offers IELTS in Harare and Bulawayo. IELTS has Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking components, with Academic, General Training, UKVI and, depending on the purpose, IELTS Online options. A valid national identity document or passport is required; non-Zimbabweans use a passport, and candidates under 18 need parent or guardian consent. Payment may be made online by card or mobile money. Fees and available dates change, and the target institution should confirm which test type it accepts before booking. German courses and examinations are available through the Zimbabwe German Society and Goethe-Zentrum Harare at 51 Lawson Avenue, Milton Park, Harare. Local course levels, prices, examination dates and places should be confirmed directly because they are not stable public details. Digital alternatives include the Zimbabwe Learning Passport, a free MoPSE and UNICEF platform supported with Microsoft Learning Passport. It provides Indigenous Language materials, Infant English Language resources, HBC syllabi, Grade and O-Level materials and an Exam Corner through web and app access, with some offline access. Radio Education also provides Indigenous Language and English learning, which can help where internet access is limited. The platform does not itself provide an independent state language qualification. Sign Language is constitutionally recognized as an official language and appears in curriculum and UNICEF learning materials. Access to suitable courses, trained teachers and regional provision remains fragmented. Parents and teachers may need Sign Language competence to support early language development. Adult language courses are not organized through one verified nationwide public directory; documented options are concentrated among the University of Zimbabwe, British Council Zimbabwe, the Zimbabwe German Society or Goethe-Zentrum Harare and other private providers. Learning Passport access is free, while university short courses, British Council subscriptions, IELTS, Goethe examinations and ZIMSEC examinations have provider- or session-dependent costs.
