Unemployment in Kenya

Unemployment describes the situation of people who are available for work and looking for it but do not have a job. It is different from choosing not to work or being unable to work. Kenya’s labour reality also includes underemployment. A person may have occasional work or a small activity but still lack enough paid hours, reliable income, or work that uses their skills. Joblessness can result from limited vacancies, changes in business activity, missing experience, location, skill mismatches, or barriers to information and transport. It is not always a sign that the individual has failed. Many Kenyan opportunities are found through employers, recruitment notices, professional contacts, community networks, training institutions, and referrals. Informal channels can be useful, but every offer should still be checked carefully. A practical search begins with a clear target, a truthful curriculum vitae, suitable evidence of skills, and a repeatable application routine. Applicants should adapt their message to each role instead of sending unrelated information. Short courses, volunteering, attachments, apprenticeships, and small projects can build evidence of ability. They are most useful when they produce a real skill, reference, sample, or recognised result. Some people respond to unemployment through farming, trade, services, crafts, or other self-employment. These paths can create income but also involve uncertain demand, business costs, and personal financial risk. Unemployment can affect money, confidence, health, and family relationships. A balanced response combines regular job-search work, careful spending, supportive contact with others, and protection against scams.
