Friendship in Ethiopia

Local terms for a friend include ጓደኛ (guadegna), ወዳጅ (wedaj) and, in Afaan Oromo, hiriyyaa; the suitable term depends on the language and region. Buna, the coffee gathering or ceremony, creates conversation, hospitality, social connection and sometimes space for resolving disagreements. It is a social practice, not a friendship institution. Iddir or eder provides mutual help, while iqub is a savings group. Both can create trusted contact and support networks, but neither replaces a personal friendship. No general state office registers or manages friendships in Ethiopia. The Ethiopian Civil Society Organizations Authority registers and supervises formal civil society organizations under Proclamation No. 1113/2019, while the Ethiopia Communications Authority provides the telecommunications and digital framework. Clubs, associations and civil society organizations may have their own membership rules, registration requirements, contributions and schedules. Community elders, religious authorities or trusted people may help mediate a disagreement informally. In some Oromo and regional settings, Jaarsummaa refers to an elders-based process for consensual conflict resolution. Personal friendships have no general national age, gender, religious or ethnic eligibility rule. Practical access can nevertheless differ because of language, class, ethnicity, religion, gender, urban or rural location, mobility, safety, social expectations and internet connectivity. Digital contact depends on access to a device, network and data. Mobile penetration increased from about 26% to 33% between 2020 and 2024, while internet access increased from about 15% to 19%, so online friendship maintenance remains uneven. Friendship alone does not automatically create maintenance, representation, residence, inheritance, guardianship or emergency rights. Consent, privacy, property, bodily integrity and protection from discrimination apply regardless of whether a relationship is called a friendship. The Personal Data Protection Proclamation No. 1321/2024 is relevant when digital contact details and other personal data are handled. Duties connected to an organization, club or group arise from its rules or contract, not from friendship itself. A friendship can change through direct conversation, reduced contact or ending contact. A trusted person, elder, religious authority or community representative may help where informal mediation is suitable. There is no formal cancellation, deregistration or refund procedure for a personal friendship. Violence, coercion, fraud, harassment or discrimination is not an ordinary friendship disagreement and may require protection or legal assistance. Costs are situation-specific and can include transport, telephone and data, meetings, gifts, buna and group contributions. Ethiopia has no reliable national average for friendship duration, cost or prevalence, and practices differ substantially between regions, languages, religions, cities and rural areas.
