Crime in Saint Lucia

The RSLPF has nationwide responsibility for emergency response, police reports, investigations and community policing. Its Criminal Investigations Department (CID) handles investigations, while the Vulnerable Persons Team assists with sexual assault and other cases requiring specialized support. Saint Lucia has no reliably documented central online portal for cybercrime reports, so contact the RSLPF or a police station directly. For a non-emergency incident, report it to the nearest police station as soon as possible. Ask for a copy of the police report and request English-language assistance if communication is difficult. After sexual assault, medical care and evidence preservation can take place alongside a police report; reporting remains a personal decision. Do not physically resist during a robbery, and do not use self-defence as a substitute for contacting the police. A general standard fee for filing a report has not been established in the available information, while investigation and court timing depend on the case. Gender-based violence is considered substantially underreported. The St. Lucia Crisis Centre provides counselling, education and other support. The Women’s Support Centre offers temporary accommodation, legal aid and psychosocial assistance. The Division of Gender Affairs provides policy, advocacy and referrals, while the Family Court and Department of Social Services provide additional functional pathways. Under the Domestic Violence Act 2022, a person may seek a protection order, a no-contact order or emergency monetary relief, including measures affecting access to a shared household. The Computer Misuse Act has been in force since 6 July 2018. It covers conduct such as unauthorized access, electronic fraud, unauthorized modification, malicious communications and indecent photographs of children. Preserve messages, screenshots, URLs, account details and timestamps without altering the original material, then contact the police. Do not rely on deleting messages or confronting the suspected offender. For young people in conflict with the law or requiring care and protection, the Boys Training Centre (BTC) is the established residential facility for boys. Its services include counselling, education, skills training, health and psychological or psychiatric support, home visits and social work. Access depends on institutional referral. Probation and Parole Services support rehabilitation and parole. A planned Youth Services Centre, New Beginnings Transit Home and Upton Gardens Girls Centre should not be treated as operating services without current confirmation. Everyday risk reduction includes securing doors and windows, using a safe for valuables and travel documents, carrying little cash or jewellery, using licensed taxis and avoiding isolated beaches or poorly populated areas at night. Do not invite unknown people into accommodation, including a yacht. Stay alert at ATMs, banks and tourist locations. Large events, street or beach parties and festival periods, including the Saint Lucia Jazz and Arts Festival around May and Carnival around July, can increase opportunities for theft and other incidents. No reliable municipal crime-rule difference has been established; the same national police system applies across Saint Lucia, with Castries serving as a major institutional centre. Visitors may also seek consular assistance, but it does not replace a local police report.
