History in Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone's history runs from archaeological evidence of human settlement at least 2,500 years ago through Atlantic trade, British colonial rule, independence, civil war and post-war reconstruction. Freetown developed from settlement projects for formerly enslaved and liberated Africans, while colonial rule later created different political and educational systems in the colony and the Protectorate. The country's past is documented through archives, archaeology, oral histories, museums, court records and public testimony, often with competing interpretations.
