History in Montenegro

The earliest recorded history of present-day Montenegro includes Illyrian communities and Roman rule. Medieval Duklja, later called Zeta, formed an important local political tradition before the area became divided among regional powers. The Crnojević dynasty helped establish Cetinje as a political and religious centre in the late Middle Ages. From the early modern period, the territory experienced continuing pressure and influence from the Ottoman Empire, Venice and other Adriatic powers. Coastal settlements such as Kotor developed within maritime networks that differed from the political and military conditions of the mountainous interior. The Petrović-Njegoš rulers strengthened Montenegro's autonomy and state institutions during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Montenegro received international recognition as an independent state at the Congress of Berlin in 1878 and became a kingdom in 1910. In 1918, it entered a union with Serbia that became part of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, later called Yugoslavia. After the Second World War, Montenegro became one of the republics of socialist Yugoslavia. It remained in a state union with Serbia after Yugoslavia's breakup and declared independence in 2006. Historical accounts may differ over the meaning of 1918, the balance between regional identities and the relationship between statehood, dynastic rule and Yugoslav integration. Museums, archives, inscriptions, religious buildings, fortifications and local landscapes provide evidence, but each source reflects its date, purpose and perspective.
