Language in Sierra Leone

English is Sierra Leone’s official and main institutional language for government, law, Parliament, politics and formal schooling. Krio serves as a widely understood bridge language, especially in public campaigns and communication across regions, while Mende, Temne and other national languages remain central to regional life and culture. Schools use local or community languages in Grades 1–3 and move to English from Grade 4, so language access changes by setting and education level.
