Nature in Tonga

Nature in Tonga includes volcanic islands, coral and limestone islands, reefs, lagoons, mangroves, forests, wetlands and the surrounding ocean. The archipelago has about 170 islands but only around 700 square kilometres of land spread across more than 700,000 square kilometres of sea. Fishing, coastal communities, tourism, development and climate hazards all affect how these ecosystems are used and protected.
