Living in Turkmenistan

Turkmenistan is located in Central Asia and borders the Caspian Sea to the west. The country has around 5.9 million people. Much of its territory is covered by the Karakum Desert, while the Kopet-Dag Mountains rise in the south. The climate is dry and continental, with very hot summers, little precipitation and cold winters, especially inland. Many people live in cities such as Aşgabat, in modern residential districts, while villages and oases are more strongly shaped by agriculture and livestock farming. In daily life, family, community and shared meals play an important role. In cities, many people travel by bus or car; in rural areas, distances are greater. Jobs are found, among other sectors, in administration, energy, agriculture and trade; people often spend their free time with relatives, at celebrations or outdoors.
