Employment in Taiwan

In Taiwan, employment is usually based on an employment relationship between a worker and an employer. The worker performs agreed work under the employer’s direction, and the employer provides pay and working conditions. A work agreement commonly covers the job, workplace, pay, working hours, rest, leave, probation, and ways to end the relationship. A written contract helps both sides understand what was promised. Employment can be full-time, part-time, temporary, fixed-term, dispatched, or project-based. The correct form depends on the real working relationship, not only on the name used by the parties. Many employees are connected to labor insurance, known locally as 勞保, and to National Health Insurance, known as 健保. Enrollment and responsibility depend on the worker’s status and the organization’s situation. Taiwanese workplaces may use Mandarin terms such as 到職 for starting work, 試用期 for probation, 薪資 for pay, and 離職 for leaving a job. Understanding these terms makes everyday communication easier. Basic employment protections concern pay, working time, leave, safety, equality, and fair treatment. Special rules may apply to foreign workers, domestic workers, young workers, public employees, and regulated occupations. A normal employment process includes finding a vacancy, applying, interviewing, receiving conditions, signing or confirming the agreement, starting work, and completing payroll and insurance arrangements. Workers should keep contracts, payslips, attendance records, notices, and important messages. These records help clarify rights and solve disagreements through the employer, a labor office, or an employment service channel.
