Apprenticeship in Belgium

An apprenticeship in Belgium is a structured route that combines workplace learning with lessons from an education or training provider. It is intended to develop both occupational skills and broader knowledge. Belgium has Community-based systems rather than one national apprenticeship model. Dutch-speaking provision often uses the term duaal leren, French-speaking provision commonly uses alternance, and the German-speaking Community has its own vocational arrangements. The learner usually spends part of the programme with an approved employer and part in a school or training centre. The exact balance varies by occupation, programme, and Community. The workplace teaches practical tasks, professional habits, safety, teamwork, and responsibility. The education provider covers occupational theory and may also teach languages, mathematics, digital skills, or general subjects. A written agreement normally explains the roles of the learner, employer, and training provider. Workplace supervision and progress reviews help connect daily work with the learning plan. Assessment may include practical performance, coursework, tests, or a final occupational evaluation. Successful completion can produce a recognised qualification, but the precise result must be checked for each programme. Apprenticeships offer early work experience and contact with employers. They also require reliability, regular attendance, and the ability to learn in two different settings. Not every occupation or employer offers an apprenticeship place. A learner may need help from a school, training service, or guidance organisation to identify a suitable route and workplace.
