Nature in Iran

The Persian word for nature is tabiat, written طبیعت. In Iran, nature changes greatly across short and long distances because elevation, rainfall, temperature, soil, and access to water are very uneven. The Alborz Mountains rise south of the Caspian Sea, while the Zagros range stretches across western and southwestern Iran. Mountains collect snow and rain, feed rivers and springs, provide summer pastures, and create habitats at different heights. The northern Caspian region contains humid slopes and broadleaf forests often called the Hyrcanian forests. These green landscapes differ sharply from the drier plateau and are important for soil, water, wildlife, agriculture, and recreation. Central and eastern Iran contain vast drylands, including the Dasht-e Kavir and Dasht-e Lut. Deserts are living ecosystems with specialized plants and animals, but heat, distance, salt, loose ground, and scarce water can make travel dangerous. Iran also has steppe, semi-desert, river valleys, lakes, marshes, and seasonal wetlands. Wetlands provide habitat for resident and migratory birds, store or filter water, and support nearby communities, yet they can shrink when drought and water use reduce their supply. The Caspian coast in the north differs from the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman coasts in the south. Southern natural systems include warm coastal plains, tidal areas, mangroves in suitable locations, islands, coral communities, and marine habitats. Iran’s wildlife includes large mammals, mountain animals, desert species, birds, reptiles, and rich plant life. Some species need wide, connected habitats and quiet breeding areas, making hunting pressure, roads, pollution, and habitat fragmentation serious concerns. Protected areas have different purposes and levels of restriction, including national parks, wildlife refuges, protected areas, and natural monuments. Visitors should check local access rules because a place that looks empty may still be ecologically sensitive or restricted. Nature offers food, water, shade, soil protection, tourism, learning, beauty, and cultural meaning. Its limits are real, because damaged dryland vegetation, polluted water, disturbed wildlife, and eroded soil may take many years to recover.
