History in Tuvalu

Tuvalu's history combines Polynesian settlement, island communities, Christian missions, colonial rule, wartime change and independence. Earlier knowledge was preserved through oral genealogies and detailed knowledge of land and sea, while later records come from churches, colonial administration, archives and community memories. Tuvalu became independent on 1 October 1978 after separating from the Gilbert Islands and developing its own administration.
