Health in Portugal

The public health system is called the Serviço Nacional de Saúde, usually shortened to SNS. Public care is organised through local services such as a centro de saúde, hospitals, and specialised units. A centro de saúde is normally the first place for routine primary care, prevention, family medicine, nursing, and some tests. Access and registration depend on your address, status, and the local service. Hospitals handle specialist care, serious illness, operations, and emergencies. A hospital is not always the best first stop for a minor or routine problem. Pharmacies, called farmácias, provide medicines, advice, and some basic health services. A pharmacist can help with common minor problems, but serious symptoms need medical assessment. Private doctors and clinics are another route, often used for speed, choice, or services not immediately available through public care. Private care usually involves direct payment or an insurance arrangement. Bring your identity details, health information, medication list, allergies, and previous records to appointments. Explain symptoms clearly and ask what the next step is. Urgent and emergency care are different from routine appointments. For severe symptoms, sudden danger, serious injury, breathing problems, or loss of consciousness, use the emergency pathway rather than waiting for a normal consultation. Health information may be given in Portuguese, especially in public services. Ask for repetition, bring a trusted interpreter when appropriate, and keep written instructions after every important visit.
