School in Portugal

The Portuguese school system is called educação escolar. It is organised into educação pré-escolar, ensino básico, and ensino secundário. Educação pré-escolar is early childhood education before the main school stages. It supports language, social development, movement, play, and preparation for learning, but it is different from compulsory basic schooling. Ensino básico is the central compulsory school stage. It is divided into three cycles, with children moving from the first years of basic learning to more specialised subjects as they grow. Ensino secundário follows basic education. Students usually choose between different study directions, including scientific-humanistic programmes, vocational programmes, and other specialised options. Portuguese is the main language of teaching in most schools. Schools may provide support for pupils who are still learning Portuguese, while foreign languages are commonly part of the curriculum. Public schools are funded and organised by the state, while private schools are run by independent organisations. Families should compare teaching language, location, support, transport, and the school’s educational approach. Assessment includes classroom work, tests, projects, and teacher evaluation, depending on the stage and subject. Progression normally depends on meeting the learning requirements of the year or programme. For a child moving to Portugal, the practical process usually involves identifying the local school area, presenting previous school records, and discussing the child’s age, language level, and learning needs. The school can explain placement and available support.
