The public healthcare system in Poland is commonly associated with NFZ, the National Health Fund. Access depends on your insurance, legal situation, and the type of care you need. For ordinary illness, many people start with a primary care clinic called a przychodnia. Primary care is often called POZ, and a family doctor is a lekarz rodzinny. A doctor may provide advice, treatment, a referral, or an electronic prescription called e-recepta. An electronic referral is called e-skierowanie, and pharmacies can use prescription information to provide medicine. Specialist care, hospital care, dental care, mental health care, and rehabilitation may have different access routes. Private services can be faster or easier to arrange, but they usually require direct payment or private insurance. For a sudden serious emergency, call 112 or 999, or go to an emergency department. Explain the location, what happened, how many people need help, and whether anyone is in immediate danger. Keep your identification, insurance evidence, medicine list, allergies, and important medical records available. Tell medical staff about regular medicines and conditions even if your Polish is limited. Do not share prescription medicine with another person or stop important treatment without medical advice. A pharmacist can explain how to use a medicine, but a doctor diagnoses serious or unclear problems. The main limits are waiting times, language barriers, referral requirements, and differences between public and private care. Health access is personal, so confirm the correct route with the clinic, insurer, or responsible public service.
