Shopping in Pakistan

A neighbourhood shop, often called a dukaan, is useful for daily items and familiar repeat purchases. Bazaars bring many small shops together, while larger stores and malls offer more fixed-price shopping. The price may be fixed in a modern store but open to discussion in some markets. Bargaining is most common for selected goods and services, not for every item. Before buying, compare quality, size, material, and the final price. For clothes, shoes, electronics, and household goods, inspect the item carefully and ask what happens if it is faulty. Cash remains important, especially in small shops and local markets. Cards, bank transfers, and mobile payments may be available in some places, but they should not be assumed everywhere. Pakistan has strong traditions of textiles, leather goods, crafts, spices, jewellery, and household products. Quality can vary widely, so a low price does not always mean good value. In a market, greet the seller politely, ask the price without showing anger, and leave calmly if the item is not suitable. Keep your belongings secure in crowded places. For food, medicines, cosmetics, and packaged goods, inspect the seal, condition, and date information. Do not buy damaged or poorly stored products when safety is uncertain. Shopping customs differ by city, market, and family setting. Dress respectfully, ask before photographing stalls or people, and allow extra time for conversation and comparison.
