It can help adults strengthen basic skills, complete general education, improve Dutch, or prepare for a new educational route. VAVO is a form of adult general secondary education. It can help adults obtain or complete parts of secondary qualifications such as VMBO, HAVO, or VWO. Professional upskilling is often called bijscholing or omscholing. Bijscholing deepens skills for a current occupation, while omscholing supports a move into a different occupation. Learning can be formal or informal. Formal learning may end with a diploma, certificate, or recognised qualification, while informal learning can happen through supervised work, projects, reading, practice, or coaching. Employers often use workplace learning to improve technical, digital, safety, language, leadership, or customer-service skills. The value depends on whether the learning is connected to real tasks and recognised by the relevant workplace. A certificate alone does not guarantee a job or promotion. Adults may face limits involving time, money, caring duties, confidence, or previous education.
