Modern Greek, called ellinika in Greek, is the official and main public language of Greece. It is used in government, most schools, healthcare communication, employment, media, signs, and everyday local life. Greek uses its own alphabet. Learning the letters and their sounds makes it easier to read names, transport information, forms, shop signs, and simple messages. Spoken Greek changes with context, region, age, and level of formality. Learners do not need to master every variation before they can handle useful daily conversations. English is a major foreign language in Greek education and is common in tourism, international study, and some workplaces.
