Nature in Greece

The Greek word for nature is “φύση” (fýsi). In Greece, nature forms a varied network of mountains, valleys, forests, scrubland, farmland, rivers, lakes, wetlands, caves, beaches, dunes, rocky shores, and marine habitats. Mainland Greece contains high mountain ranges and deep gorges, while island landscapes range from green and wooded to dry and rocky. Differences in height, geology, rainfall, and distance from the mainland create many distinct habitats. Mediterranean vegetation is adapted to hot, dry summers and may include evergreen shrubs, aromatic herbs, pines, oaks, and olive landscapes. Mountain and wetland areas support different communities that depend on cooler, wetter, or more sheltered conditions. Greek wildlife includes mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, freshwater species, seabirds, and migrating birds. Coastal and marine ecosystems also provide habitat for fish, sea turtles, marine mammals, and many smaller organisms. Protected areas help conserve valuable species, habitats, landscapes, and ecological connections. Protection does not always exclude people, but activities may be restricted or managed to reduce disturbance, damage, pollution, hunting, fishing, or construction pressure. Nature supports drinking water, fertile soil, pollination, food production, shade, climate regulation, recreation, and local identity. Healthy ecosystems also make places more resilient, although they cannot remove every risk from fires, floods, drought, or erosion. Tourism and outdoor recreation can support local livelihoods and appreciation of nature. They can also create crowding, litter, noise, trail damage, wildlife disturbance, and pressure on water or coasts when visits are poorly managed. Responsible access means staying on suitable routes, taking waste away, controlling pets, avoiding fires, and leaving plants, rocks, nests, and animals undisturbed. Local signs and instructions take priority because each habitat has different needs.
