Study in Yemen

Yemen has an established but administratively fragmented higher education system. The main fields include medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and allied health, engineering, computer and information technology, natural sciences, agriculture, business and administration, law and Sharia, education, media, languages and humanities. Program availability and recognition depend on the institution and its approval status. Public universities, private or أهلي universities, colleges, faculties and higher institutes offer regular and non-full-regular study. Distance, open, affiliate, correspondence and online programs require the relevant special licensing and quality requirements. A cited unified student regulation and policy uses 75% attendance as a benchmark for study participation. Admission usually starts with the General Secondary Certificate or an equivalent qualification. A program may also set a minimum grade, capacity limit, subject entrance examination or competitive examination. Medical programs commonly assess biology, chemistry and English; engineering and computing programs commonly assess physics, mathematics and English; administration and humanities programs commonly assess Arabic and English. For the 2026/27 cycle, a Sana'a-side unified electronic coordination portal covers public and private institutions, including general, parallel, private-expense and postgraduate options. Final registration remains subject to the institution's stated deadline. Study costs are not covered by one reliable current nationwide tuition table. Fees vary according to the institution, field, study mode, year and administrative area, and separate coordination, examination and registration charges may apply. The current 2026 free-seat portal FAQ lists an aptitude-examination fee of 4,000 YER and a grievance fee of 2,000 YER for the relevant process. Under the same current Sana'a-side policy, free seats are listed as 10% of enrolled students at public institutions and 5% at private institutions, with selection based on electronic application, eligibility, an aptitude examination, automated ranking and confirmation. Public general government study is described as tuition-free for Yemenis under the applicable policy, while parallel or evening study, private-expense places and private institutions charge fees. The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in Aden, the Ministry of Education and Scientific Research in Sana'a, the Higher Council for Higher Education, university councils, registrars and the national accreditation and quality-assurance authority have different responsibilities. Official portals and schedules may differ between administrative areas, so applicants should verify the current notice for the chosen institution. Accreditation, licensing and program approval should be checked before enrollment. After completing coursework, practical or laboratory work and examinations, graduates may obtain a qualification, seek document attestation or continue to a master's or doctoral program. Foreign qualifications require additional authenticated documents and an equivalency process through the responsible authority.
