School in Hungary

Hungarian schooling begins with óvoda, a kindergarten stage that supports early development and preparation for school. It is followed by általános iskola, the general school that provides primary and lower-secondary education. After the earlier years of general school, pupils continue toward an upper-secondary route. The main options include gimnázium for broad academic education, technikum for technical education, and szakképző iskola for occupation-focused vocational education. A gimnázium mainly prepares pupils for the school-leaving examination and possible higher education. Some academic secondary schools begin earlier than the usual transition point and therefore cover more school years. A technikum combines general secondary subjects with technical and vocational preparation. A szakképző iskola places stronger emphasis on learning an occupation and practical skills. Schools follow educational programs and assess pupils through classroom work, oral answers, written tests, projects, and other tasks. Reports and school records document progress, while major transitions may involve admission procedures or examinations. The central school-leaving examination is called the érettségi. It is important for entry to higher education and is associated mainly with academic and technical secondary routes. State, church-run, private, minority, and international schools may have different educational profiles. Availability, admission practices, language, extra services, and family costs can vary. Children arriving from abroad may need placement based on age, previous schooling, records, and language ability. Hungarian-language support is important because everyday participation and subject learning can otherwise be difficult. Families should maintain direct contact with the school and keep copies of reports, certificates, and translated records. Questions about attendance, meals, transport, materials, support, and progression are best clarified before enrollment.
