Banks in Tuvalu

Tuvalu has two state-owned banks, National Bank of Tuvalu (NBT), the commercial bank, and Development Bank of Tuvalu (DBT), which combines banking with development lending. The Australian dollar is legal tender, and Tuvalu has no independent central bank or monetary authority. Banking access is concentrated in Funafuti, with DBT branches and agents on seven outer islands.

Tip

Treat Tuvalu banking as a concentrated system with limited provider choice, so match the bank and account to the service you actually need. DBT is the practical starting point for published savings products and outer-island access, while NBT should be contacted for commercial banking and international payments. Keep funds needed soon in an accessible product, treat term deposits as money unavailable until maturity, and do not mistake liquidation priority for deposit insurance.
