History in Turkey

The territory of the Republic of Türkiye lies mainly in Anatolia and includes a small part of southeastern Europe. Its location between continents made it a meeting place for peoples, languages, religions, trade routes, and empires. Ancient Anatolia was home to societies such as the Hittites, Phrygians, Lydians, Greeks, and others. Greek and Roman cities, roads, temples, and theaters remain important parts of the cultural landscape. Many archaeological sites show that local history is older and more varied than any single national story. The Byzantine Empire, centered at Constantinople, governed much of the region for long periods. Christianity, imperial administration, architecture, and the city later known as Istanbul left lasting marks on cities and communities. Turkic groups entered and settled in Anatolia over time, and the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum became a major power. Seljuk architecture, caravan routes, madrasas, mosques, and decorative arts contributed to later regional culture. The Ottoman Empire grew from a small Anatolian principality into a large state spanning parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa. It included Muslim and non-Muslim communities, used several administrative traditions, and connected diverse regions through trade, law, military service, and local institutions. The Ottoman period ended after military defeat and political upheaval following the First World War. The Republic of Türkiye was founded in 1923 under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, followed by major reforms in state institutions, education, law, language, and public life. The twentieth and twenty-first centuries brought urbanization, industrialization, migration, political change, and stronger connections with the wider world. These changes affected family structures, regional identities, work, education, and the meaning of citizenship. Historical memory is not identical for everyone. Different communities may emphasize different events, ancestors, losses, achievements, or names for places. Learning history responsibly means separating broad chronology from contested interpretations and listening to more than one community’s memory.
