Living in Tonga

Tonga is a Polynesian island nation in the South Pacific, east of Fiji, with around 103,197 people. The country consists of many flat coral islands and some volcanic islands. The tropical climate brings warm temperatures, humid summers and occasional cyclones; on the smaller islands, the sea, palm trees and fertile soils shape daily life. In and around Nuku'alofa on Tongatapu, many people live in houses with gardens and usually reach work, school and markets by car or bus. On the outer islands, boats are more important, and farming, fishing and small shops shape the daily routine. Families, churches, shared meals and celebrations have a firm place in many communities.
