Nature in Togo

Togo contains five ecological zones, from Guinean and Sudanian savannas to mountain and gallery forests, dry and wet forests, mangroves, lagoons, lakes, rivers and the Atlantic coast. Nature supports farming, livestock, fishing, forest products, medicinal plants, beekeeping and tourism, but land conversion, fires, overgrazing, poaching, pollution and coastal erosion put pressure on ecosystems. Togo has 83 protected areas covering about 14% of its territory, including three national parks and four Ramsar wetlands. Access, permitted use and visitor charges depend on the site and its management rules.
