Language in Togo

Togo's language landscape combines French for formal public life with national and local languages used in daily communication, culture and regional information. French is the current official language used in laws, government records, courts, schools and examinations. Ewe and Kabyè have national-language status, while languages such as Tem, Mina, Moba, Dagomba, Ifè and Akposso remain important in particular regions and communities.

Tip

Use French as the working language for formal documents, courts, government procedures, schooling and examinations in Togo. Add the language commonly spoken in the relevant community when comprehension, local information or participation matters. Do not assume that Ewe, Kabyè or another local language will be accepted as a substitute for French or supported uniformly across the country.
