Living in Timor-Leste

Timor-Leste lies in the eastern part of the island of Timor, includes several smaller islands, and has around 1.3 million people. Mountains, dry hill landscapes, tropical forests, and coastlines shape the country. A pronounced rainy season is followed by a mostly dry period; it is often cooler in the mountains than on the coast. In Dili, many people live in houses or simple apartments, while larger plots of land and traditional building methods are common in rural areas. Motorcycles, minibuses, and boats connect places, although roads in the highlands can be more difficult to travel on depending on the season. Many people work in agriculture, trade, administration, or fishing; families, markets, and community festivals shape leisure time.
