Health in Syria

Health care in Syria combines services run or coordinated by the Ministry of Health, regional Directorates of Health, UN and NGO providers, and private facilities. Primary health care provides consultations, diagnosis, treatment, medicines, laboratory and X-ray services, vaccination, nutrition, sexual and reproductive health, chronic-disease care and mental-health support, with referral to hospitals when needed. Access and continuity vary sharply by location, provider capacity, security, staffing, supplies and ability to pay. In 2025, WHO reported that 46% of primary health-care facilities were fully functional, while about half were not operating.

Tip

Treat health care in Syria as a locally verified pathway rather than a uniform nationwide service. Choose a functioning provider that can deliver the needed care, and confirm referral, medicine availability, cost, local requirements and follow-up before relying on it. For ongoing treatment, keep your records together and arrange continuity because capacity, security, supplies and payment conditions can change.
